SYNERGY Engineering & Environment was established in October 2015 by John Dundee in the wake of Golder Associates taking the decision to close its Belfast office. John had worked for Golder for 9 years, since the early days of their presence in Belfast, across the UK, Ireland and beyond as being only one of a handful of Civil Engineers in the European region of the company meant that there were significant opportunities. Prior to his time with Golder, John spent the previous 13 years of his career with AECOM.
The name SYNERGY Engineering & Environment was chosen in an attempt to reflect that engineering and environment can work together, but also to represent the approach to projects that is fundamental to the way the business operates, namely
client and consultant complementing each other’s knowledge and ability.
In both cases the ideology is that the combined effect is greater than the sum of the parts; that is SYNERGY. Engineering & Environment also represent the areas of work in which SYNERGY is involved.
Whilst it is always the desire to work alongside and complement our clients, it is also appreciated that in some instances clients are too busy and just need someone to ‘get on with it.’ At SYNERGY that is not a problem.
We are also aware that clients have a variety of needs be it a quick fix, a particular project or a longer term advisor / trusted consultant role. At SYNERGY all of these are available. We can offer hourly rates, daily rates, fixed fees for a defined item of work, or a long term call off style agreement based on reduced rates in return for a guaranteed minimum number of hours or days per month or year. Whatever your needs, we can discuss a fee arrangement which will suit those needs.
At SYNERGY we are not in the business of undercutting competitors just to get work. Our philosophy is to offer what we feel is a value for money service. We accept that if you already have a consultant undertaking this work and performing, why would you want to jeopardise that relationship?! We are also aware that others may attempt to undercut us, but we work with clients on the basis of a mutual trust and integrity relationship and are always willing to discuss client concerns or challenges.
Personal Experience
John is a Chartered Civil Engineer with more than 22 years’ experience in civil engineering and environmental consultancy. He started out in infrastructure design and construction supervision, notably drainage, potable water and flood management, and became involved in landfill engineering and waste management, including recovery and treatment and civic amenity sites.
In recent years he has been active in the renewables sector particularly with wind energy and waste to energy projects. He has been responsible for the contract management for various projects, with contract values up to £3.5m. This included all phases from: conceptual design; feasibility and appraisal; tender document preparation; specifications; health and safety plans; tender assessment; on-site supervision; project progress; cost tracking and assessment and authorisation for interim; and final payments. Contracts used have included the EEC family of
contracts and traditional ICE contracts. In addition, John is a Technician Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and has undertaken the role of CDM Coordinator (soon to be replaced with the amended role of Principal Designer) for a variety of projects including water treatment works, sewerage schemes, water-main renewals, industrial developments, landfill engineering and other waste management developments, both internally within his employers’ organisations and also directly for the client where other designers have been employed.
John started working for local consultant Gault and Chambers in 1993, following a 2 month student contract in the summer of 1991. John was with Gault and Chambers through a number of transitions including the acquisition of a stake by Bullen Consultants through to a full buy out by Bullen, followed by Bullen being bought by the then Faber Maunsell, now an integrated part of AECOM. In 2006, John sought a new challenge in his career and took the decision to join Golder Associates becoming an Associate in 2013. With some restructuring across the Golder global company, the decision was taken to close the Belfast office in July 2015. John agreed to a request to stay on for 2 months to close out some existing work but turned down the opportunity to relocate to another office which would have also meant relocating his family. After spending time considering what his next step would be, it seemed clear that continuing to offer his skills and experience could be through his own company and so in October 2015 he started SYNERGY Engineering and Environmental Consultancy.
